Trends from hard-to-reach industrial Neuroscience market revealed

This year's survey, the fourth in a series, touts a rare blend of traditional academe and hard-to-reach industrial segments, with academic participants from Baylor to Wake Forest and industrial microscopists from Abbott to Wyeth-Ayerst. The 50:50 mix of university and industrial responses had a significant impact on trends in instrument use. MME's unique data presentation easily assesses which faction is responsible for specific changes in direction. Data is presented in four chapters, analyzed by title, type of lab, work, and discipline. For example, Analysis by Type of Lab revealed lower confocal microscopy use in industry compared to academe (17% vs. 29%). The good news for sales and marketing managers: industrial labs will be trying to catch up in 2002. Equal numbers of academic and industrial microscopists have confocal microscopes on their shopping lists. Conversely, the industrial sector leads in FTIR use, opening the door in academe for a new cadre of manufacturers of imaging spectrometers. In addition to extensive profiles on computer, microscope, and camera use, the study also contains special mini-reports on Internet buying trends and new directions in live cell use.

The availability of the rare industrial data resulted from a new list choice. "Last year we used the Society for Neuroscience pre-registration list," said Barbara Foster, MME President. "It gave us a realistic profile of instrument use, but its academic emphasis was limiting from the sales and marketing perspective. The 50:50 balance on this year's list is extremely healthy, providing insight into the more lucrative industrial client base. Traditionally, industrial sales are shorter in duration and easier to close but data from this segment of the market has been notoriously hard to find."

MME's Neuroscience 2001 Market Survey was compiled on data collected in early December. MME has also just released reports from M&M (the Microscopy Society of America annual meeting) and, in mid-January, will be releasing their findings from the American Society for Cell Biology meeting. Details on MME's contract research as well as off-the-shelf reports are currently available at www.MicroscopyMarket.com.
